Straight Grades
Straight Grades from austenitic stainless steel contain a maximum of 0.08% carbon. There is a misconception that the straight value contains at least 0.03% carbon, but the spec does not require this. As long as the material meets the appropriate physical requirements, there is no minimum carbon requirement.
Grade "L" Grade "L" is used to provide extra corrosion resistance after welding. The letter "L" after the type of stainless steel shows low carbon (as in 304L). Carbon content is 0.03% or below to avoid carbide precipitation. Carbon in steel when heated to a temperature in what is called the critical range (800 degrees F 1600 degrees F) precipitates exit, Carbon C6 with chromium and collects at the grain boundary. Grade "H" Grade "H" contains a minimum of 0.04% carbon and a maximum of 0.10% carbon and which is designated by the letter "H" after the alloy. Use Grade "H" especially when the material will be used at extreme temperatures, carbon higher helps the material maintain strength at extreme temperatures
This "Annealing" solution simply means that the carbide that may have been deposited (or moved) to the grain boundary is put back into the solution (dispersed) into the metal matrix with an "upgrade" L annealing process used where annealing after welding is impractical , such as the field where the pipes and fittings are being welded.
